Chapter 1889 - 1890: A Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Only then did Chu Yu remember that she was different from Ling Zhenfei. In terms of economic level, she at most counted as moderately well-off, while Ling Zhenfei was actually well-to-do; they weren't even in the same bracket.

Just a while ago, Ling Zhenfei had made over a million just by betting on rough stones—he was a textbook rich guy.

Ling Zhenfei said, "It's really nothing. You don't know how poor my family used to be—nothing but four walls, couldn't even scrape together two decent pieces of furniture, so I'm not all that particular about things."

Chu Yu broke into a happy smile and said, "I knew Big Brother Ling wasn't that tacky. In that case, I'll lead the way for you guys."

Ling Zhenfei and Mo Lun followed Chu Yu and Qi Tianyu, and the four of them walked together toward the hotel they were staying at.

Rainbow City was the largest city in the area, so even at night it was still very lively.

The four of them chatted and joked as they walked, and stopped at the entrance of a hotel.

The hotel wasn't very big, but the view was quite nice, and it was kept very clean and tidy. Ling Zhenfei really liked this kind of feel.

So Ling Zhenfei settled in here. They stayed on the third floor of the hotel, which faced the street, and they could easily see what was happening outside.

That night, just as Ling Zhenfei was about to rest, he suddenly heard a knock on the door. When he opened it, he saw Chu Yu standing outside.

Chu Yu was wearing a long nightgown, which actually went quite well with the weather in Rainbow City.

The first time he saw Chu Yu, Ling Zhenfei had already sensed that her aura was different.

Someone who had grown up around jade would naturally be influenced by it; Chu Yu carried on her a sort of otherworldly air that you usually only saw in jade.

Ling Zhenfei hadn't had that many interactions with Chu Yu, but his impression of her was fairly good.

Only that first time, because she didn't really know him, she'd been a little less than friendly toward him; but in the encounters after that, Chu Yu had been really nice.

Seeing Chu Yu out there, Ling Zhenfei asked in mild surprise, "What's wrong, Chu Yu, is something up?"

Chu Yu hesitated a little and said, "Nothing really, I just couldn't sleep and wanted to chat with you."

Ling Zhenfei glanced at the time—it was already late—then said, "Sure. I think the view from here is pretty good. Why don't we chat while we look at the view?"

Chu Yu nodded. The two of them leaned on the railing like that, watching the flow of people on the street grow thinner and thinner as they started talking.

"Big Brother Ling, I really have to thank you. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't even know how to go home after what happened today. If my dad found out something like this happened, he'd skin me alive."

Ling Zhenfei said, "You learn a lesson every time you take a loss. The reason Mr. Chu let you come out was because he wanted you to suffer a bit, to see how cruel the world can be. It's just that this particular loss was a bit big, that's all."

Chu Yu said, "Yeah. At first I thought the one who tricked us was that guy who'd partnered with us to buy rough stones, but who could've guessed the problem would turn out to be so complicated."

Ling Zhenfei said, "That's how it is— the more profitable the trade, the more people there are trying to scheme their way into it. It's all just because there's money to be made."

Chu Yu laughed and said, "I really don't seem cut out for this society, do I."

Ling Zhenfei said, "Don't let this one thing get you discouraged. Go out and see more, and you'll get used to it eventually."

Chu Yu nodded. "Forget it, let's not talk about this anymore. Let's talk about you. What are you doing in Rainbow City? You know, when I heard your voice today, I was so excited."

Ling Zhenfei said, "Running into an old acquaintance in a foreign place—of course you'd be excited."

Chu Yu asked, "So what did you come here for?"

Ling Zhenfei said, "Did you see the guy who came with me? He's from Wuliang Mountain nearby. I have some ties with them, and this time I came because I have to make a trip up to Wuliang Mountain."

Chu Yu was a little surprised and said, "That mountain's got a really strange name. I've never even heard of it. What kind of place is it, is it fun?"

Ling Zhenfei shook his head. "I don't know if it's fun or not, but I do know it should be pretty quiet there. I'm just going to get some peace and quiet."

Chu Yu said, "Did something happen to you? Why are you suddenly craving peace and quiet?"

Ling Zhenfei said, "It's hard to explain to you. Anyway, something came up."

Chu Yu said, "Then when are you coming back? I'll treat you to a meal."

Ling Zhenfei said, "I don't know when I'll be back. We'll talk about it when I return. I'll go visit Old Master Chu then anyway."

The two of them chatted for quite a while. Eventually, Chu Yu started to feel sleepy, and only then did she reluctantly head back to her own room.

Ling Zhenfei also smiled slightly and went back to his room.

What had happened today was just a small episode to him; he hadn't thought about asking for anything in return.

Ling Zhenfei still really liked helping others. Maybe it was because he'd suffered too much in the past, so he couldn't stand seeing others suffer.

Early the next morning, Chu Yu came knocking on his door to call Ling Zhenfei to breakfast.

Ling Zhenfei didn't turn her down, but while they were eating, he noticed the way Qi Tianyu was looking at him was a little off—he was clearly unhappy.

Ling Zhenfei knew why. It was definitely because Chu Yu was getting too close to him, so Qi Tianyu wasn't too pleased.

Ling Zhenfei saw it but didn't say anything. There were some things you couldn't just spell out too bluntly yourself.

After breakfast, it was time for Ling Zhenfei to leave. Mo Lun had already urged him several times.

And so, Chu Yu reluctantly waved goodbye to Ling Zhenfei.

Ling Zhenfei and Mo Lun headed in the direction of Wuliang Mountain, while Chu Yu and Qi Tianyu also had their own things to do.

Wuliang Mountain lay just east of Rainbow City, an expanse of continuous mountain ranges.

Among them, Wuliang Mountain was the main peak. Its elevation wasn't very high, but it was famous for its dangerous terrain.

There was also something else interesting about it: because the mountains connected with other mountains, and with the dense forest and strange rocks, there were no obvious paths. Even if you entered the mountains, you might not necessarily be able to find Wuliang Mountain.

The poisonous insects and ferocious beasts in the mountains, plus the strange illusions in the woods, meant getting lost in the mountains had become an everyday occurrence.

Because of that, Wuliang Mountain was known as one of the hardest mountains to find.

The real reason so many people failed to find Wuliang Mountain, of course, was that the people on the mountain didn't want others to know where it was.

The strange mists and confusing illusions in the mountains were mostly created on purpose by the cultivators living there to mislead outsiders.

Ling Zhenfei actually really liked going into the mountains, because he'd grown up in them.

He'd already gone into Xianling Mountain twice—so Wuliang Mountain was nothing to him.

With Mo Lun as their guide, the two of them moved through the mountains. Even though the path ahead was shrouded in mist, under Mo Lun's lead they still walked very quickly.

Ling Zhenfei asked Mo Lun, "Just how big is this Wuliang Mountain of yours? We've walked for so long and still haven't arrived?"

Mo Lun said, "Our Wuliang Mountain stretches for hundreds of li, with over a hundred big and small peaks. On top of that, we have special Formations in the mountains, so you end up taking many detours when you walk, which makes the journey feel even longer."

Ling Zhenfei said, "Looks like your Wuliang Mountain really has some secrets. How many experts at the Dawen Realm like you are there?"
